85 mile and 200K New Jersey Brevet Route Descriptions
Control #1 and 85mile turnaround - Freeman's Bicycle Shop - Frenchtown, NJ - I've highlighted in greeen, the bike shop. Check out the ice cream shop next door!
APRIL 9 - We've scouted the 200K approximately 10 times - creating as safe a route as possible. PLEASE obey all NJ Bicycling Laws - that means stopping at traffic lights, staying in the far right lane, and using hand signals. For safety, the addition of mirrors (especially helmet) is highly recommended. The pedestrians have the right of way in Princeton, please STOP before entering crosswalks with pedestrians approaching or inside.

Courtesy to all pedestrians, vendors, control points, vehicles, etc... will help keep the brevets welcome in New Jersey. Patronage of stores which allow use of restrooms is expected - especially if it's a secret control (hint, hint).

I am staying at Forrestal Village Center on Friday evening. Pre-registration is between 7and 9 p.m. at the Marriott that evening. You may pick up your brevet card, route sheet and goodies - meet other cyclists and myself.

85 mile route

A shorter route is offered for riders who prefer a more leisure pace with less climbing. Everyone starts and finishes together. 85 milers turn around at Frenchtown - Control #12 (Freeman's Bicycle Shop).

There are other points more north to turn around at such as Milford which is 3.6 miles north of Frenchtown - Route 619N is a popular road, very scenic, amongst cyclist. It travels north along the Delaware.

If you like a challenge, ride further north adding Adamic Hill and Bellis Road - at Mile 59.2 - Hawks Schoolhouse Road turn (Amoco Station on corner) you can stay straight - keeping on Rt 519 and loop back to Milford and follow the route sheet to Frenchtown and back into Princeton.

See, lots of good alternatives!

The elevation for the full 127.3 miles is 6500+ ft. As mentioned above, the 27.3 miles extra is a loop north of Frenchtown, travelling along the Delaware River to Milford, Riegel Ridge, Bloomsbury, Asbury, Greenwich and Spring Mills.

Counties travelling through are Mercer, Middlesex, Hunterdon and Warren (the hilliest). Most cycling time is spent in Hunterdon.

Steep climbs include Adamic Hill and Bellis Road. Shire Road and 579/Church St (unmarked) are technical descents. All the above mentioned are in Hunderton County. Warren County is the most northern county of the 200K - not much climbing here. You might catch a glimpse of hot air ballons along a ridge or the dairy farmers at milking time. There's even a tunnel to go through (oooooh!) The windmill to the right is the oldest Dutch windmill in the United States.

Whichever route you choose, you'll experience quiet roads with lots of horses, sheep, llama, deer, cows, chickens, etc...

Don't miss checking out the Delaware River - Frenchtown and Milford are the best spots. In Milford - take a quick detour on Church St down by Chesterfield Inn (we have permission to take in the view).
